Modesty

Freedom 40 Hull #1
Designed by Garry Hoyt and Halsey Herrshoff
Modesty is a full-keeled boat with a swing keel. She draws Four feet with the board up, and Nine feet with the board down. She is Forty feet on deck, with a Twelve foot beam, and sports a large transom-hung rudder. Designed weight is Eleven tons net, and current weight is Fourteen tons
The hull is made of solid hand-laid fiberglass, while the deck and cabin-top have a plywood core (as fresh as the day it was built). There are Fourteen opening bronze ports: Six in the aft cabin, Four in the saloon, Two in the head, and Two in the v-berth. Additionally, there are two large hatches, one in the saloon and one in the v-berth. A tall coaming extends forward of the raised aft cabin, surrounding the cockpit and continuing all the way to the bow. It has a Six-inch wide teak cap-rail.
Her rig is an unstayed cat-ketch. It consists of Two free-standing aluminum spars of equal height, the main mast far forward and the mizzen just aft of the main cabin. The wishbone booms are aluminum and the sails are Two-ply Dacron at approximately 450 square feet each. A 600 square foot Mizzen Staysail can be set with the wind aft of the beam. Top speed under sail thus far is Ten knots, with Five knots being average.
In addition to the suit of sails, Modesty has a 30HP outboard engine mounted on an A-Frame that can be raised and lowered. The outboard turns with the rudder to provide vectored thrust for incread manueverability. Fuel consumption is Two gallons-per-hour at Seven knots, and One gallon-per-hour at Five knots. The fuel tank holds Eighteen gallons of gasoline. There are also a pair of oarlocks in the cockpit, with oars to go with them.
Starting in the bow, there is a small locker with access to the base of the main-mast. Directly aft is the v-berth with a single berth on each side, shelves above and lockers below.
Aft of the v-berth is the head, with the marine head to Port, sink with large counter-top to Starboard, and a teak grating floor with pan below to catch the water while showering. Unique to this boat is the solar hot-water heater mounted on the cabin-top above the Starboard side of the head. This heater feeds both the shower and the galley.
Aft and to Port is the semi-circle dinette with round table inlaid with contrasting wooden veneers that form a sunburst pattern. To Starboard is the U-shaped galley with deep double-sink, two-burner alcohol stove with oven, top-loading refridgerator, liquor locker, and plenty of storage. The sink is fed by both a pressurized faucet and foot-pump faucet, with a 200 gallon capacity for fresh water. The refridgerator has more than adequate insulation and will keep ice frozen even in the hottest climates. The liquor locker is well insulated and cooled by spill-over air from the refridgerator. The galley comes stocked with specialized Freedom 40 plates.
Aft there are two double bunks, one to port and one to starboard. The after end of these berths extend under the bridge-deck in the cockpit. The Starboard berth, being closest to the off-set compainionway, has no cushions and is instead used for storage. The compainionway, offset to Starboard, opens into the cockpit directly besides the mizzen mast. It has a pair of swinging doors, a sliding over-head hatch, and a protective dodger.
The center-cockpit is spacious and then some. A center console with teak table-top and teak-grating drop-leaves on each side allows the entire crew to eat without rubbing elbows. A cup holder and binnacle are mounted on the after-end of this table, just ahead of the large wheel. The front of the consol opens for storage. Sail controls are on the Port side of the cockpit, with the mainsheet winch on the main cabin's top, and the mizzen winch on the aft cabin's top. These being the only controls needed to efficiently operate the rig, the helmsman can easily single-hand this large boat.
The aft cabin's compainionway is also offset to Starboard, with the electrical panel just inside. There is a large double-bunk set athwartships, with shelf aft and storage below. On the aft cabin-top is mounted the Eighteen-gallon fuel tank, controls for the outboard, and a pair of solar panels which provide 200 watts of power.
Included with the vessel is a very unique dingy. This 10' craft is a quarter-scale replica of the larger boat, with a cat-rig of its own utilizing a two-piece windsurfer mast and sail. Oars are also included. This tender stores on a cradle on the cabin-top, and is launched over the Port side with a simple, ingenious davit system that is beyond description of mere words.
